Cam Newton Makes Admission About His Playing Style In 2021

The New England Patriots decided to give Cam Newton a chance and the veteran quarterback may consider changing his playing style.

Truth is, Newton is one of the most dangerous rushers the league has ever seen at quarterback. He measures at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds. NFL quarterbacks are nothing like Newton. They don’t have his pure raw power as a rusher.

In 2020, the Patriots relied on Newton’s running skills and speed. He ran the ball 137 times and that’s just two carries short of his career-high for 592 yards and 12 TDs.

The 2015 NFL MVP wasn’t efficient on the ground and averaged 4.3 yards per rush. This was the second lowest mark of his professional career. We don’t even count 2019 when Newton barely saw the field due to his injury.

Cam Newton to change his playing style

The 32-year-old said he’s starting to feel the consequences of all the big shots he takes when running and tucking.

The veteran was featured on the cover of the July/August edition of Cigar Aficionado. Here’s a nice question. How will he fit inside the organization this time?

“You won’t see me being a battering ram like I once was,” said Newton.

Michael Giardi of NFL Network asked the veteran about this quite. The signal-caller shared some details and admitted that he was getting older.

“I’m getting older,” he said. “You know, you just have to move a little differently… Because a nick and a bruise where I’m at, it sticks a little longer than just a day and then going about your business.”

Newton made a few good points.

NFL teams that draft dual-threat quarterbacks try to shift their players to be something else later in their career. However, this plan doesn’t work sometimes and players struggle to meet expectations.

The Patriots will probably put Newton at center again. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones joined the team in the first round of the NFL Draft. Belichick used the 15th overall pick to get the rookie.

This year is different and Newton will have more weapons to work with.
