Former Patriots QB Gives Surprising Insight on Cam Newton Mac Jones Duel

Cam Newton and Mac Jones compete for the top job in New England. Jones is a backup quarterback now but he can easily snatch the lead role.

Former Patriots Damien Woody and Rob Ninkovich are convinced that Jones should be a starting quarterback for New England.

There are exceptions. Drew Bledsoe is one of them. He gave way to TB12 as the Patriots top quarterback. Bledsoe knows a lot about the veteran-rookie-quarterback dynamic.

Bledsoe went on the Zach Gelb Show. Gelb asked Bledsoe if the Patriots rookie should go under center in Week 1.

“I think they’ve got to let Cam go a little bit. And I would really like to see Cam get a full year. Last year, the cupboard was kind of empty up there, and I think everybody recognizes that now. There wasn’t a lot, in terms of weapons for him. They went and got some weapons, and I think it’d be great to see Cam get back out there and show why he was an NFL MVP.”

Cam Newton has more experience than Mac Jones

Gelb was a little surprised. He rebutted Bledsoe’s response and added a few details.

Bledsoe said, “We’ll see.”

The NFL legend says there is value in Jones sitting and observing for a year before taking over as the starting quarterback.

“It’d also be pretty good for Mac to watch it for a year and then be ready to rock going forward. But I’d love to see Cam get a chance to get out there, get after it, and show what he can really do… I don’t think [2020] was an accurate representation of what the Patriots can be, and I certainly don’t think it was an accurate representation of what Cam can be. If they can run the ball, playaction, and then let him use his physical tools, running the ball in a more limited fashion, I think he can still be effective.”

Jones should definitely learn a lot from other veterans. He lacks the experience to take the lead, but he also has insane skill set. We all know what that means. Head coach Bill Belichick may pick him at any point of the regular season.
