Patriots Continue With Rooster Changes, Cut Veteran Offensive Lineman

The New England Patriots are trimming their roster to perfection. Players come and go, and head coach Bill Belichick is all-in when it comes to finding the right players for the new-look team.

Offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins has to go. The Patriots signed him last month, but they cut him right away. It’s an end of an era for the player.

NFL teams have to trim their rosters and Hawkins was among the first to go. He won’t be the only player to leave the Patriots ahead of the regular season.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss confirmed the decision. The Patriots cut Hawkins on Sunday. It’s interesting to note that they had signed him on July 30.

Patriots to trim the roster to 53

The 27-year-old played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and had another year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hawkins appeared in 19 regular season games. New England did a good job on the offensive line and Hawkins didn’t have a chance to make the active roster. He will have to find a home somewhere else.

Earlier on Sunday, the Patriots decided to release wide receiver Marvin Hall, tight end David Wells, and linebacker Rashod Berry.

The NFL has new chances on the cutdown rules and teams have to cut rosters from 90 to 85 by Tuesday. That’s not all. They have to go from 85 to 80 by Tuesday. By August 31st, they have to trim the number to 53. A lot of players will have to part ways with the team.

Head coach Bill Belichick made a few moves in the offseason and he brought a lot of new names to New England. Everything points to the fact that Belichick won’t stop here. Some of his players have sustained injuries and Belichick has to have a backup plan.

There’s no room for major concern at the moment. There are no serious injuries in New England and that’s more than good news for the team and its fans. The Patriots won the preseason opener against the Washington Football Team. Players are ready to win!
