Patriots Quarterback Plan For Preseason Opener Leaked

Who will be leading the way for the Patriots tonight? The Washington Football Team will arrive at Gillette Stadium for the very first game this preseason. Head coach Bill Belichickhad to make a decision on his starting signal caller. The Patriots have to use the best quarterback option in the preseason opener. Is it Cam Newton? Mac Jones?

NFL teams use the preseason to observe their players and make the right pick for the regular season. Some say Belichick should use both Newton and Jones on the field to make the right decision. Well, guess what… That’s exactly what Belichick had planned for the preseason opener against Washington.

Belichick said Newton was “our quarterback” but he really liked Jones’ performance in training camp. The rookie was a star during practice and his teammates praised the great effort.

Patriots to have two quarterback options in the preseason opener

Patriots coaches want to see what Newton has to offer at this point. He worked with Josh McDaniels for a year, so he’s got a huge advantage. However, they also want to see what Jones can do in his rookie campaign.

Mike Reiss from ESPN reported that the Patriots will have both Jones and Newton on the field against Washington. Who is taking the lead?

“New England Patriots quarterbacks Cam Newton and Mac Jones are both expected to play in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Washington Football Team at Gillette Stadium, according to a source,” Reiss wrote. “How long they play will be determined by head coach Bill Belichick, who traditionally keeps his intentions tight-lipped, in part to keep players on edge. Belichick has previously said that Newton is the team’s starting quarterback, so Newton would be expected to take initial snaps.”

If Jones does well in the preseason opener, he has a really good chance to get the top gig. Belichick wants to see him in action and this is a good sign for the rookie.

Jones wore No. 50 in training camp but he will probably switch numbers as signal-callers can only wear numbers 1-19 in games. Tom Brady had No.12 during his time with the Patriots and the team will probably skip this number.
