Report: Patriots Have Released Quarterback Cam Newton

The New England Patriots have released Cam Newton without any announcement. NFL analysts thought that Newton would take the top position in September. He had a good chance to keep the job and lead his team to the Super Bowl this season. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was also impressed with Newton’s performance in training camp. There was a significant improvement and Newton was a step closer to winning the quarterback competition.

I guess Mac Jones won it after all. The QB competition in New England attracted the attention of pretty much every NFL person out there. Both Newton and Jones showed great skills in training camp. The rookie had to prove himself and try harder to go under center. Newton didn’t have much to prove as he is incredible talented and has awesome experience. Let’s not forget that he led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl and earned his MVP award.

The 2021 regular season is almost here and NFL teams had to bring their roster to 53 players. I guess there was no room for Newton in the group.

What led to this release?

Patriots released Cam Newton for a reason

Newton wasn’t really spectacular in 2020. His passing game was bad but his legs did a good job. The veteran was able to complete 65.8 percent of his passes. When it comes to throws, he did 2,657 yards to go with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

COVID-19 put a big dot on Newton’s resume. He tested positive for the virus last season and now he got into trouble again. He is not positive, but he violated the COVID protocols for unvaccinated players. The signal-caller wasn’t allowed to enter Patriots facilities for five days just because he traveled outside of Foxboro to have his “club-approved medical appointment.”

Jones used the perfect opportunity and Newton was Drew Bledso-ed. That’s what the whole thing looks like. The rookie used the empty space to make some magic.

It’s interesting to note that Bill Belichick was pretty positive about keeping the former MVP at center in 2021. He even said that other players have to do much better than Newton to steal his job. That’s exactly what Jones did. I guess he earned his job.
