Report: Patriots Waive Quarterback Ahead Of Preseason Opener

The New England Patriots had four options on the roster. Jarrett Stidham underwent a surgery to fix his back issue. Head coach Bill Belichick had a few options on the table and he brought Jake Dolegala in New England.

Well, this didn’t last for long. Dolegala brought his second stint with the Patriots to an end.

New England waived the 24-year-old and this made things a lot clearer for everyone.

Dolegala spent most of his time on the Patriots practice unit. Belichick brought him back right after Stidham had his surgery. According to several sources, Dolegala took part in nine training camp practices and had almost no impact to the game. Cam Newton, Mac Jones, and Brian Hoyer got most of the reps. Jos McDaniels had his focus on Newton and the rookie.

Newton and Jones will compete for the starting job in New England. Hoyer is a mentor. Belichick offered him a one-year deal and Hoyer will step in as a mentor for Jones.

The Patriots placed Stidham on the physically unable to perform list. He will stay on the sidelines until late October. The Patriots selected him in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Stidham attended showed up for practice Sunday and cheered on his teammates from the sideline.

Patriots have a few quarterback options

Dolegala is out and the Patriots have an open spot on the 90-man roster. Joe Cardona and Hunter Henry sustained injuries and will miss more time. This gives Belichick an open opportunity for new additions.

The Patriots will practice Monday and Tuesday. They will have their preseason game against the Washington Football Team. Their first opponents will arrive at Gillette Stadium.

Belichick has a few big issues to handle at the moment. First, he has do pick his next future quarterback. That’s not all. He will also have to pick the right kicker for his team. Nick Folk may easily lose his job in training camp.
