Super Bowl-Winning Running Back Reportedly Retiring From NFL

Another Patriots legend is retiring from the NFL.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter was one of the first to confirm the big news.

“Veteran RB Dion Lewis, who played 10 seasons and won one Super Bowl with New England, is retiring from the NFL despite interest from teams as recently as last week, per source,” Schefter reported. “A great run for a 5-foot-8 RB who always played bigger than his size.”

The Philadelphia Eagles selected the 30-year-old in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Lewis spent two seasons with the team and then they sent him to the Cleveland Browns.

Lewis had great time before retiring from NFL

The running back needed time to find his home in the league. He inked a deal with the New England Patriots in 2014 and this was a game-changer for the talented player.

In his three-year stint with the Patriots, Lewis stacked 1,413 rushing yards, 696 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns. He had a key role with the Patriots and gave them a chance to do something great at the end of the season.

Lewis’ time with the Patriots was brought to an end. He inked a four-year deal with the Tennessee Titans and was set to get $20 million.

Tennessee released Lewis in March 2020. This opened the door for him to ink a deal with the New York Giants. The talented player had some struggles during his time with the organization.

Lewis is not a candidate for the Hall of Fame, but his experience and great career will always motivate players to give their best on the football field.

The former Patriots player made headlines in his own way. He had great performance with his teams but he had to go somewhere else. Every football player has to retire at some point. Of course, some players play well above their 30s. Tom Brady is 42, but he is the greatest basketball player of all time. Just a handful players can do the same at the end of their professional careers.
