Watch: Cam Newton Shows Off Arm Strength in Patriots Practice Video

The New England Patriots brought Cam Newton back because he is an incredibly skilled signal-caller. The team watched him sharpen his skills throughout the summer and coaches really liked what they saw.

Newton joined the Patriots in the summer of 2020 and didn’t have much time to prepare for the new season. He got the main job but lacked strong weapons. The team finished the 2020 NFL season with a 7-9 record. Head coach Bill Belichick was well aware of the fact that Newton is an excellent player. That’s why he decided to bring him back for another season.

Patriots entered training camp with Newton, Brian Hoyer, and rookie Mac Jones. The first-rounder is doing an excellent job so far and many say he will be the quarterback of the future for the Patriots. Belichick seems to be fine with having Newton under center in September. He can easily replace the 2015 NFL MVP with Jones at some point of the season.

Cam Newton impressed coaches with great arm strength

Jones had his bright moments in training camp, but Newton showed everyone that his arm strength is really fine.

Jeff Howe from The Athletic has more on Newton.

“Based on practices reps, Cam Newton should be the starter, and it remains to be seen how many series he’ll play,” he wrote. “Newton completed 103 of 165 passes (62.4 percent) with seven interceptions and seven drops in competitive team periods. He is also 43 of 78 (55.1 percent) with two interceptions in 11-on-11s against the starting defense. In comparison to his first training camp with the Patriots, his completion percentage is down by 2.3 points and his interceptions are up (five in 201 throws in 2020), so he might need to showcase his full repertoire throughout the preseason – including the running game that is a nonfactor in a practice setting – to establish why he’s the better option to start the season.”

Fans would agree that Newton looks better than he did in 2020. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels noticed a big improvement in his games.

Things will get a lot clearer in the first preseason game. The Patriots will meet the Washington Football Team and Belichick will probably stick with Newton as a starter. He confirmed this plan on multiple occasions.
