The New England Patriots trimmed their quarterback unit and Mac Jones will be leading the team in the upcoming season. Head coach Bill Belichick decided to trust his rookie and gave him the keys to the offense. Well, that’s why he selected him in first place. The Patriots used their 15th pick on Jones. It was an impressive move and Jones did wonders in training camp. Cam Newton is out of the team, and everyone is talking about the embarrassing request he had for Jones.
Former Patriots veteran Rob Ninkovich talked about this on The Dan and Ninko Show. Well, he seems to know a lot about this request. Was this even a request? Someone from the organization shared the information with Ninkovich.
“From everything that I understand now, Mac was basically helping Cam learn the playbook,” claims the former Patriots linebacker. “Mac was having less mental errors and having a better understanding of the offense. We didn’t see Cam run any two-minute (drill), we didn’t see him run any no-huddle. You have to run no-huddle. That’s vital.”
Cam Newton will forget his embarrassing request
The Patriots got an excellent player at center. Jones was more successful in training camp. Patriots players like him and coaches saw his potential. Belichick didn’t say much and he even said that Newton was his quarterback. Jones’ impeccable performance in all three exhibition games changed his faith and Newton had to go. A lot of factors put an end to Newton’s stint with the team.
“Mac Jones, he’s going to be that guy,” said Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson. “I mean, he’s a rookie, but he plays like a vet. The way he reads defense. The way he steps up in the pocket, delivers the ball. He’s improved since the first time I’ve seen him.”
Jones has a chance to be the quarterback of the future for the Patriots. A lot of analysts have compared him to Tom Brady and even Joe Montana. Some say he throws like Drew Bledsoe. Well, Jones is trying to fit in and he is doing his best to keep his job and soak up everything he can.
