Former Patriots TE Claims Patriots Made ‘Huge Mistake’ Putting Mac Jones Over Cam Newton

Mac Jones will be starting games for the New England Patriots in 2021, and Cam Newton won’t even come back to Foxboro. The Patriots parted ways with the 2015 NFL MVP a couple of weeks before the start of the new season. This put an end to the quarterback competition in New England. Well, it wasn’t really a competition, but NFL analysts enjoyed discussing the thing between the veteran and his younger rival. Let’s not forget that Jones is just 22. Head coach Bill Belichick selected him 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Drew Bledsoe was among the first to say that the Patriots should keep Newton at center in 2021. He wouldn’t give Jones the keys to the offense. Guess what… He is not the only one to support Newton in the QB battle.

Mac Jones beats Cam Newton

Former Patriots tight end Jermaine Wiggins made similar comments right after the Patriots announced their starter for the 2021 season.

“I think it’s a huge mistake and it has the potential to be really ugly. The fact that you’re handing the keys to your organization to a rookie, on a team that we all expected based on what they did in the offseason has got to be a playoff-caliber football team. Every rookie quarterback is going to deal with growing pains, is going to deal with, you know what, now I’m in the NFL, it’s no longer preseason. They’re the disguising coverages, they’re blitzing, they’re doing all types of things that I’ve never seen before. And it’s just gonna take time for Mac to see certain things.”

Patriots coaches liked Jones a lot. He was brilliant in the preseason and the Patriots won all three exhibition games. Yes, Jones had a huge role on the field. Belichick tested his skills on the field and the result is here.

Seeing Newton go would cause a stir, but hey, he is talented and NFL teams would gladly offer him a role. He doesn’t really have a chance to be a starter as each and every team is all set up at quarterback.
