Frank Vogel Has Telling Comments on Rajon Rondo Reduced Role

The Los Angeles Lakers brought some of their former players back to the team. Dwight Howard signed with the Lakers again and he came to LA to win another ring and get that parade. He is not the only player to join the Lakers. Rajon Rondo is back, too, but he may see a reduced role with the team this time.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel discussed Rondo’s situation and gave us at least one reason to believe that Rondo won’t see too many minutes on the basketball court in the upcoming 2021-22 season. Vogel went on the “Lakeshow” podcast with Allie Clifton and Chris McGee. His team will enter training camp and there are so many questions related to the new-look team. According to Vogel, Rondo will be a seasonal leader instead of an asset for Lakers coaches.

“I don’t know who’s going to pick up the slack Dudz brought to the table for you guys,” Vogel said. “But internally, we’ve got some guys… I think Rondo coming back can be a real positive voice from a guy who’s not going to play as much, but can really impact our team with his leadership.”

Rajon Rondo will get a reduced role for a reason

It’s interesting to note that Rondo didn’t see much playing time with the Los Angeles Clippers either. They didn’t use him much in the playoffs.

Rondo was eyeing his options related the player-coach position. He got some playing time but the Clippers did what they thought was best for the team. I mean, they couldn’t play him over Patrick Beverley or Reggie Jackson. The Lakers deal with a similar situation. They won’t play him over Russell Westbrook and Kendrick Nunn. LA traded for Westbrook to get their third player for the Big 3. He will join LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the trio. In other words, Rondo won’t get a lot of minutes on the floor. He will definitely get a good role because of his leadership skills. He was a real leader in the locker room and Vogel would need to see more of this next season.
