Report: Patriots Are Open to Making a Franchise-Altering Move

The New England Patriots made a lot of moves in the offseason. They sent players away and also signed a group of talented veterans. Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry are more than happy to put on a Patriots uniform. Well, some of the players had to leave the organization. Cam Newton is no longer playing with the Patriots. The team cut him a few days ago, giving Mac Jones the keys to the offense. This leads us to another important topic. The Patriots may be open to make another big move.

Enter Stephon Gilmore.

The veteran is still hoping to get an extension. Of course, he joined the team in training camp but didn’t see any action. The Patriots placed him on the physically unable to perform list. Gilmore underwent a surgery to fix his quad and missed a big chunk of the 2020 season. Will he ever return to the field in Foxboro?

“As of this past week, the Patriots were still open to the idea of trading Gilmore, who now has to miss the first six weeks on the physically unable to perform list,” wrote Dan Graziano of ESPN. “Gilmore is known to be unhappy with his contract, which is up after the season. While there was optimism a month or so ago that he and the Patriots would get something worked out, they still have not.”

Patriots may be open to make a move and add depth to their unit

Trading Gilmore won’t be of great help for the team. They have an unexperienced but talented rookie at center. Jones will have to try really hard to keep his job. Belichick gave him a big task heading into the new season. He probably had a few good reasons to do so. Jones is an exceptional player and some say he helped Newton learn the rulebook. He is a natural fit for the Patriots and this may make things easier for him.

Let’s see how the 2021 NFL season unfolds. The Miami Dolphins will be the first team to arrive at Foxboro. Belichick will meet Tua Tagovailoa in Week 1. We all know what that means.
