Report: Patriots Tried To Trade Stephon Gilmore

The New England Patriots didn’t have Stephon Gilmore in training camp. The former Defensive Player of the Year has yet to get what he wants from the team. Things got stuck in the middle of nowhere and NFL fans keep asking questions about his future with the team.

Guess what… The Patriots really wanted Gilmore but they also considered trading him. Head coach Bill Belichick and his team had a really high asking price for the veteran cornerback. NFL teams wouldn’t give up on a high draft pick to get a veteran who is in the final year of his contract. Let’s not forget that Gilmore also missed a lot of time last season.

The Patriots didn’t give up on Stephon Gilmore

Jeff Howe from The Athletic discussed Gilmore’s situation. He didn’t forget the fact that the Patriots really tried to trade the veteran.

“Before the Patriots placed cornerback Stephon Gilmore on the reserve/physically unable to perform list last month, his name again arose in trade circles, according to a source. It doesn?t sound like his name came up nearly as frequently as it did in 2020, though. The Patriots have never been close to trading Gilmore, according to another source.”

The team had a high asking price and Gilmore is still here. He didn’t take practice in training camp but showed up to work with players.

“There are several reasons why a trade hasn’t made sense for any party. First, other teams have been reluctant to give the Patriots a high draft pick and then pay Gilmore — who turns 31 on Sunday and is in the final year of his contract — near top-of-the-market money. Big-money deals are widely considered the exception for cornerbacks on the wrong side of 30, and that reluctance was exacerbated with Gilmore missing all of training camp and the preseason. Similarly, the Patriots haven’t been interested in just giving away the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year who continued to play at a high enough level in 2020, according to league evaluators.”

Gilmore has a lot to offer at this point, but his contract issue seems to be a big problem in his career. Let’s hope that the veteran will make the best move for his career.
