Patriots Place Linebacker On Injured Reserve; Release Practice Squad Player

The New England Patriots are playing against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday and the team has made a few moves. The Patriots decided to release a player of their practice squad. There was no room for defensive back Elijah Benton.

Benton joined the Patriots practice unit this month. The Cleveland Browns released him and he ended up signing with the Patriots. I guess the Patriots didn’t like what they got from the 25-year-old and he had to go.

Losing Benton is not the only change the team saw these days. Linebacker Harvey Langi ended up on injured reserve after suffering an MCL sprain in the win over the New York Jets. He stepped in as a replacement for Dont’a Hightower as a starter. Hightower was sidelined due to his elbow and ankle issues. It was the first start for the linebacker but he sustained his injury after five defensive snaps.

The Patriots brought Langi back a few months ago and he saw action in all seven regular-season games. He was given a nice role with the team but this injury may put a dark dot on his future.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss was among the first to confirm the injury.

Patriots are not worried about their practice squad

Langi entered the league as a member of the 2017 undrafted class. He spent the past three years in New York and then returned to New England for a one-year deal. The linebacker re-signed in a procedural move after the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline passed last month.

In his seven games with the Patriots, Langi had two tackles and played 16 snaps on defense along with 98 snaps on special teams.

The Patriots had five linebackers listed as questionable on last Friday’s injury report. Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Josh Uche, Ja’Whaun Bentley, and Brandon King were questionable for the game.

The Patriots have three wins so far in the regular season. Playing against the Chargers is a big challenge, and Belichick will have to prepare his team for it. Some players are still trying to sort things out, but most of them are doing a decent job on the field. They beat the Jets and it was a beautiful 54-13 win.
