Patriots Sign Veteran O-Lineman James Ferentz From Practice Squad

The New England Patriots won’t have offensive lineman James Ferentz on the practice squad anymore. The team has officially signed him to the 53-man roster on Wednesday. The information was confirmed by the NFL transaction wire.

Ferentz saw action in three games this month. The team elevated him from the practice squad on two occasions and he was also a COVID-19 replacement. The offensive lineman totaled 34 snaps and Patriots coaches really liked his potential.

Patriots had to make a change to the practice squad

New England put the 32-year-old hit the field as left guard in the games against the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys. The team rotated him at right guard last Sunday. Ferentz entered the NFL as undrafted free agent in 2014 and had his early stage as a member on the Houston Texas practice unit. He has been part of Belichick‘s system since 2018 and also spent time with the Denver Broncos. The lineman has won two Super Bowls and he may have a chance to get another ring with the team.

The Patriots added defensive backs Brian Poole and De’Vante Bausby to the practice unit Wednesday. They also signed linebacker Calvin Munson of the Miami Dolphins’ practice unit. These changes gave the Patriots 52 players on the active roster. Their practice unit has 17 players.

The NFL has specific rules, and the Patriots could only elevate him as a COVID-19 related replacement. New England had to make a decision and adding him to the active roster was a reasonable solution.

The Patriots have plans for their roster and they may need to see more from Ferentz. Veteran center David Andrews saw limited action in Wednesday’s practice due to an ankle issue.

The Patriots have won several games in the regular season. They also lost a few games but players are motivated to get the job done. Their win over the New York Jets added fuel to the fire and Belichick has the right winning team right now. They better pull out their heavy artillery in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
