DeMar DeRozan Has Strong Words for Lakers Star Russell Westbrook

The Los Angeles Lakers were linked to several superstars in the offseason. They did try to get DeMar DeRozan and a few others, but ended up trading for Russell Westbrook. General manager Rob Pelinka built a good team. The Lakers really looked like contenders heading into the new NBA season. Unfortunately, the team was plagued with injuries. LeBron James has missed a few games and he is day-to-day at this point. Some of the players had to undergo surgeries.

Anthony Davis and Westbrook are leading the team and they are actually doing a decent jab.

DeRozan signed with the Chicago Bulls and had his first game against the Lakers. The NBA veteran talked to Chris Haynes from Yahoo Sports and discussed the current situation in LA, Broddie, and the reasons he had to join the Bulls.

“I felt like going to the Lakers was a done deal and that we were going to figure it out. I was going to come home,” DeRozan said. “The business side of things just didn’t work out. A couple of things didn’t align. It didn’t work out. It’s just part of the business, part of the game. My next option was definitely Chicago. So, looking back at it, it worked out well.

“But there’s always motivation. It may be just to come home and play in front of friends and family, competing against teams you grew up watching. There are all sorts of motivations that you carry and you try to channel that energy into the game. I find that in every game, but definitely coming back to your hometown, you want to play well and you have that motivation to put on a great show.”

DeMar DeRozan understands Lakers’ need to get Russell Westbrook

The Lakers traded Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Montrezl Harrell to the Washington Wizards. They got Westbrook and it was a good decision. Broddie is a really talented player and DeRozan knows it. Shaquille O’Neal has something else to say about him though. He would never call Broddie a MVP or an icon. If you ask big Shaq, he will say Westbrook is more like a role player for the Lakers.

“Nah, Russ is a Hall of Fame player,” DeRozan told Haynes. “It’s hard to turn down that caliber of player. I can’t speak for the Lakers, but they went with what they felt was best for them. And all due respect to them. No hard feelings. No animosity, but I just look at it as part of the game. A deal is never done until it’s done. I learned that. It just didn’t work out. I’m just happy I’m in Chicago.”

The Lakers have been winning and losing games lately. Hopefully, LeBron will join his teammates sooner than expected.
