Players added fuel to the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. The whole thing started in the NBA Finals in the late 1980s. Things took a terrible turn in last night’s game and LeBron James was punished for elbowing Isaiah Stewart. Yes, it was really ugly and there was a big delay.
The whole thing started when the four-time NBA champions hit Stewart in the eye. The Pistons big man was called for a loose ball foul, but LeBron was ejected for a flagrant-2 foul. Lakers veteran Russell Westbrook was called for a technical.
LeBron James, Isaiah Stewart punished following the altercation
Stewart’s face was covered in blood and he lost his temper. Pistons players and coaches had to hold him back but he was determined. He was all over the place, stepping over coaches just to get to LeBron. The Lakers superstar kept his cool. It wasn’t an intentional hit. LeBron didn’t want to hurt Stewart. He even asked for his number so he can apologize for the bloody face. Stewart didn’t get over this easily. He even ran down the tunnel to get to the Lakers bench. It was a wild and aggressive adventure for the Pistons big man.
The Pistons led LeBron’s team 78-66 at the time of the altercation. LeBron earned the second ejection in his career. The first one happened in 2017 in which he was ejected for arguing with an official. The Lakers had a big comeback and finished the game with a win.
Let’s move on to the consequences. Stewart will miss a couple of games without a pay. LeBron will sit out the upcoming game. No pay, of course. The Lakers are playing against the New York Knicks at Madison Garden Center. Stewart won’t play against the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.
This was a rather unexpected outcome as most fans thought that Stewart would miss more games due to his attitude on the floor. He was too frustrated to leave the arena and his aggressiveness was a bit too scary. Fun fact? LA will meet Detroit again next week.
