Patriots Contract Offer to Odell Beckham Jr. Revealed

The New England Patriots could really use a good wide receiver at the moment. They were close to getting one. The Patriots made an offer to former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. What happened next? He ended up signing with the Los Angeles Rams.

How much did Bill Belichick and his team offer? Independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reported that the Patriots wanted to give Beckham a little over the veteran’s minimum. The Seattle Hawks and New Orleans Saints made similar offers. I guess the veteran wanted more, so he signed with the Rams and will earn $7.25 million. It looks like Beckham had a few good reasons to avoid the Patriots and go to LA.

Patriots offer wasn’t enough for Odell Beckham Jr.

The Patriots didn’t have enough cap space to get Beckham. They wanted the veteran but he wasn’t really into joining the team. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that the Rams were No.1 on Beckham’s list, followed by the Packers, Chiefs, and Seahawks. Belichick’s team was at the bottom of the list.

“In addition to the #Rams that signed him, the Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, Saints and Chiefs all made contract offers for then free-agent WR Odell Beckham,” says Kleiman. “All similar offers, GB and KC were minimum offers. SEA, NE and NO were a little above minimum. LAR won out at the end.”

New England was open to getting Beckham. However, he had a different strategy in his mind. The Patriots are led by a rookie, and Beckham probably wanted to share the field with someone like Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Russell Wilson. These guys lead pass-first offenses. Belichick relied his team on a rush-first approach.

Mike Reiss from ESPN discussed the situation as well. He said that Beckham didn’t like the offer New England made, adding that he wasn’t a fan of the offensive attack as well.

Truth is, the Patriots don’t need Beckham at this point. They don’t need him to win games. Mac Jones and his team had a wonderful performance against the Cleveland Browns.
