Lakers Signing Mason Jones to 2-Way Contract

The Los Angeles Lakers will get all the help they can get right now. Several Lakers are out after entering the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Now the Lakers are signing Mason Jones to a two-way contract. The Athletic’s Shams Charania confirmed the deal.

Jones was an undrafted rookie following the 2020 NBA Draft. He inked a couple of two-way contracts with the Houston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers in 2020. The Sixers waived him right before the offseason. Jones joined the South Bay Lakers and now he has a chance to do something about his NBA career. This may be an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Lakers sign Mason Jones for a reason

Jones was great with the South Bay Lakers early in the season. In 12 games with the team, Jones is averaging 17.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 41.2% from the 3-point line and 49.6% from the field. The talented player scored 30 points twice in the regular season and had great performance in the win over the Los Angeles Clippers’ G League affiliate. He offered 9 assists and 6 rebounds.

In the 2020-21 season, Jones saw action in 26 games for the Rockets and six games for Philadelphia. During his time with both teams, Jones averaged 5.3 points and shot 36.4% from the 3-point line.

Los Angeles needs an extra pair of hands now. The franchise have both two-way roster spots filled by forward Chaundee Brown and center Jay Huff. They will have to cut one of these two from the two-way deal to add Jones to the roster. Who will leave the team?

On Sunday, the league confirmed the revisions to the current rules regarding replacement and two-way players. NBA teams can sign one replacement player for each player who had entered the league’s health and safety protocols. LA signed Isaiah Thomas and Jemerrio Jones.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel entered NBA protocols, but he should return really soon. David Fizdale has stepped in as a replacement. Things are a bit messy, but it should be better in a couple of weeks.
