Mac Jones Was Happy To See This Ex-Patriots Quarterback Get Starting Shot

The New England Patriots had a packed quarterback unit. Mac Jones was leading the way for the team, followed by Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham. Well, Garrett Gilbert was the fourth option for the team. The Patriots decided to part ways with their practice squad quarterback. Gilbert got a chance to join a new team and he landed a starting job with the Washington Football Team. Mac Jones is really happy for the opportunity Gilbert was given.

Gilbert and Ron Rivera know each other really well and this helped him adjust to the new system right away. The Washington Football Team was without Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen as both players got COVID. Washington had to think really fast and find the right replacement for their signal-callers. Gilbert was thrown in the fire right away.

In his game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Gilbert completed 20 of 31 passes for 194 yards and zero touchdowns. Washington did lose the game but Gilbert was fine.

Mac Jones is really happy for Gilbert’s opportunity

Jones was really excited about his former teammate.

“Garrett was a great help to me in the quarterback room,” he said Wednesday. “He’s a great teammate. He played really well, and he got a chance to go out there and spin it around, so we’re all very happy for him. He was very nice to me and everybody in our quarterback room and provided a lot of great information.”

Gilbert joined the NFL in 2014. However, he didn’t really get a chance to start games. Maybe Washington will give him the opportunity he was looking for this whole time. Head coach Bill Belichick kept him on the roster but there was no room for Gilbert. Tom Brady was more than enough and now they have Jones. The rookie is doing a decent job.

When it comes to Jones, he and his Patriots teammates will miss the Buffalo Bills for the second game in the regular season. They won the first one a few weeks ago and now is the perfect time to add another win to the chart.
