Report: Jerod Mayo Not Among Finalists For This Head Coach Job

Jerod Mayo interviewed for the head coach position for the Denver Broncos. He has the right experience and skillset to be a head coach somewhere else. Is he the next head coach for the Broncos?

Ian Rapoport from NFL Media reported that Mayo won’t be part of the Broncos in 2022. So, who will be coaching Denver next season? Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, and Green Bay Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett are finalists for this job.

Mayo had his interview with Broncos’ decision makers on January 18. His interview went well, but Quinn, O’Connell, and Hackett did better than him. These three will have another interview with the Broncos. In other words, Denver is not on the list of potential suitors for Mayo.

Jerod Mayo may be a head coach somewhere else

The Patriots assistant is really successful, and he has attracted the attention of many other teams. Mayo will also interview with the Las Vegas Raiders. His interview will take place on Tuesday.

Las Vegas may be the future destination for Dave Ziegler too. The team has shown great interest in the Patriots’ director of player personnel. He may soon join the team’s open general manager position. Several sources have also reported that the team may want to join Ziegler with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Well, McDaniels hasn’t interviewed with the team.

McDaniels hasn’t received any request for an interview for the team’s head coaching job. Mayo and Ziegler could soon work together. McDaniels will probably stay in New England. He accepted the offer made by the Indianapolis Colts, but left the team on thin ice. NFL teams may be trying to avoid similar scenario.

Head coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t lose McDaniels that easily. The offensive coordinator has done an incredible job this season. He worked with a rookie quarterback, and Mac Jones turned out to be much better than any other rookie in his position.

How will the Patriots handle the eventual departure of Mayo and Ziegler? Head coach Belichick always has a backup plan.
