Stephon Gilmore Added To Pro Bowl Roster Months After Patriots Exit

Stephon Gilmore earned his spot on the 2022 Pro Bowl for a reason. Let’s not forget that this is the same player who didn’t get a contract extension with the New England Patriots. The former Defensive Player of the Year joins the Pro Bowl roster as an alternate. This will be his fifth Pro Bowl experience.

Gilmore joins defense end Brian Burns in Las Vegas for the all-star event. The Carolina Panthers have a pair of representatives in this year’s game. This is a great opportunity for the veteran.

Stephon Gilmore makes Pro Bowl after departure from New England

The veteran cornerback saw action in eight games with the Panthers. He joined the team through a midseason trade with the New England Patriots.

Gilmore had great game with the Patriots. His skillset helped the team win a lot of games. Gilmore tore his quad and his 2020 season was brought to an end. He had to undergo a surgery in the offseason to get fixed. There were too many rumors about his future role with the Patriots. No one knew if Gilmore would join the Patriots in training camp. He did show up for practice and joined his teammates on the field. Head coach Bill Belichick didn’t activate Gilmore ahead of Week 1. He stayed on the sideline for the first six games of the regular season. New England made a decision and Gilmore left the team in Week 5. What did Belichick get in return? A 2023 sixth-rounder. A minor return for someone who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019.

The veteran didn’t want to say anything about his departure from New England. However, he did admit that the Patriots didn’t handle his situation properly. In one of his interviews, Gilmore offered details of the departure.

Gilmore is definitely grateful for the chance he was given. He learned a lot during his time with the Patriots. Playing under Bill Belichick is the real deal. Patriots have great coaching staff, and Gilmore respects that. Now is the perfect time to shine with his new team.
