‘Blockbuster’ Trade Scenario Sees Patriots Land Former Receiver

The New England Patriots are having a busy offseason. Head coach Bill Belichick has to fill up the holes on his roster. He has to address several needs. The Patriots may boost the linebacker group and they can also land a former receiver. Is Brandin Cooks good enough to join the Patriots again? To get him, the team would have to give up on the 2022 second-rounder.

“Adding a true No. 1 receiver could help (Mac) Jones take another positive step in Year 2,” detailed Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report. “The Patriots provided Jones with several good complementary pass-catchers but no legitimate top target. Jakobi Meyers led the team with 866 yards and two touchdowns. However, he provided a passer rating of only 81.0 when targeted.”

Patriots have a reason to land a former receiver

The Patriots can really give up on a rookie to get a familiar name. According to Dan Graziano from ESPN, the Houston Texas weren’t happy about moving Cooks. Well, the wide receiver doesn’t approve their “attitude.”

“Such a joke,” Cooks tweeted after the team traded Melvin Ingram II to the New Orleans Saints.

Of course, the Texans could make this deal work. They could use a good prospect to upgrade the roster.

Cooks had a really good performance with the Patriots in 2017. He had 65 passes for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns. Belichick can use these numbers again. He would gladly get a trusted player instead of working with an inexperienced rookie. That’s why the whole Cooks thing makes sense.

Cooks had an excellent connection with his Patriots teammates, especially Tom Brady.

Pro Football Focus ranks Cooks at No.25 on the 2021 list of receivers. He has ranked in the top 25 in every season since 2018. We won’t count 2018 in this one.

Cooks won’t get a big chunk of the Patriots cap space in 2022. It’s up to Belichick to make a move. He should definitely consider joining forces with his former receiver. Maybe Cooks is the right receiver to catch passes from rookie quarterback Mac Jones.
