Ex Patriots Star Seen as ‘Fit’ For Steelers

The New England Patriots lost a big player early in the 2021 NFL season. According to Jeremy Fowler and Matt Bowen, former Patriots star Stephon Gilmore could be a good fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gilmore is entering free agency this spring. He is a valuable player and NFL teams have shown great interest in his skills. Of course, head coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t get Gilmore back. The veteran cornerback sustained an injury and had to undergo a surgery. He didn’t join Patriots players in training camp. Many thought that Belichick gave him an extra time to recover. Well, the Patriots head coach had other plans for his star.

Patriots star could join the Steelers

Fowler and Bowen can already see Gilmore play with the Steelers.

“Why it makes sense: We struggled with narrowing down this fit because many teams would like Gilmore,” Fowler said. “About two dozen teams had an interest at the trade deadline.”

Fowler added that Gilmore is a good fit for the Steelers because they really need depth at cornerback. His experience could really help the team. Fowler added that Steelers coaches really Gilmore’s game.

“The 49ers desperately need corner help and will probably poke around here,” Fowler. “But Pittsburgh is retooling at the position as well, and Steelers coaches have long been fans of Gilmore’s play.”

Gilmore would play with Brian Flores again. This connection means a lot for the Steelers. Pittsburgh would be happy to see Gilmore on the field.

“With Gilmore’s detailed coverage technique and high-level awareness, he’d fit with plenty of teams in free agency,” said Bowen. “But we like him in Pittsburgh, where the veteran corner can check receivers in man or match/carry in the Steelers’ multiple zone schemes.”

Belichick didn’t mind losing Gilmore. He had JC Jackson on the roster. The Patriots are in a tricky situation again. Jackson may leave the team, leaving the Patriots with a big hole on the roster.

NFL teams will make a lot of changes in their rosters. Belichick would love to win the Super Bowl again. We have a few good reasons to believe that Gilmore won’t be on his roster in the near future.
