Report: Patriots Have Signed Veteran Quarterback

The New England Patriots have Mac Jones at center, but this didn’t stop them from getting even more power. According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Patriots have just signed veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer. He earned a new contract with the team and fans are not really surprised. Schefter’s report reveals that Hoyer will stay with the Patriots in the next couple of seasons.

“Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer has reached an agreement on a two-year contract to return to the New England Patriots, his agent confirmed. The deal is worth $4 million with $3 million guaranteed and incentives, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.”

Patriots signed the veteran quarterback to support the offense

Head coach Bill Belichick decided to bring back a familiar face to the quarterback unit. Jim McBride of the Boston Globe was the first to confirm the signing.

Hoyer was the Patriots’ primary backup this past season. He was a mentor for Jones. The Patriots put Hoyer on the field late in the game. In 2021, Hoyer saw action in five games and completed nine of eleven passes for 227 yards and one score. The Patriots trusted him enough to give him a key role. Hoyer’s primary contribution is this particular role. He is a mentor for Jones.

The veteran is not in his primetime, but his role as a mentor makes him a key player on Bill Belichick’s roster.

The Patriots will enter the 2022 NFL season without Josh McDaniels. They haven’t appointed a replacement, meaning Hoyer will see bigger load in the upcoming season. He will have to help the team handle offensive challenges.

Many NFL analysts would agree that Hoyer is great when running the scout team. He knows the system and he’s been part of the Patriots for a really long time.

If Hoyer doesn’t get a spot on the 2022 roster, he will probably take a coaching or advisory role. Hoyer has yet to make a decision on his retirement, meaning he is ready to see more action in the final stage of his career as a NFL player.
