Report: Patriots Prefer Top Free-Agent WR Over Amari Cooper

The New England Patriots lack depth at several positions. They need to add more players to their receiving unit and the same goes to linebackers. According to Mike Giardi, the Patriots will go after available WR options in the offseason.

The Patriots have been linked to many players in the 2021 season and Allen Robinson is definitely one of them. That’s exactly what Giardi said on Twitter. Truth is, Robinson is a really good option for the Patriots. NFL analysts thought that he’d join the team a lot earlier. Robinson is not the only player on the list of potential candidates. Amari Cooper is a favorite to land the position too.

Patriots to get a more durable WR

Head coach Bill Belichick had Julian Edelman for over a decade, but the 2018 Super Bowl MVP decided to retire. The Patriots have a big hole on their roster and they are still looking for a top receiver. Cooper is a top option for the team and some fans like the idea of seeing him put on a Patriots jersey.

How will Belichick replace his talented wide receiver? The Patriots wasted a first-round pick on N’Keal Harry. The third-year receiver struggled to make an impact and the Patriots will probably let him go this offseason. Belichick also got Nelson Agholor, but he had a disappointing season. The veteran didn’t meet expectations.

Cooper has the right athleticism and age. Belichick won’t have to worry about an aging roster in this scenario. Robinson is an excellent player, but Cooper is younger an him. Robinson also tore his ACL in 2017 and had to sit out the entire season. He has a history of injuries and has missed 29 games in his eight seasons in the NFL. In other words, Belichick will probably opt for a more durable player.

Robinson is averaging 62 receptions, 801 yards, and five touchdowns. Cooper did better than this. He is averaging 74 receptions, 1,010 yards, and 6.5 touchdowns per year. Well, Cooper worked with better quarterbacks in his career. Belichick has Mac Jones at center right now and Cooper won’t have trouble building a connection with him.
