Sean McVay got himself into a thing with Bill Belichick. The Los Angeles Rams head coach shocked the world with his reaction to Belichick’s first-round pick. The New England Patriots used the No.29 overall pick to get Cole Strange. Was this a good move for the Patriots?
This pick was shocking on so many levels. First, NFL analysts said Strange is a second-round pick. Second, the Patriots really need receivers and cornerbacks.
McVay was among the first to react to Strange’s selection.
“How about that? And we wasted our time watching him thinking he’d be at 104 maybe,” McVay said.
This was definitely a joke. However, many people said the same and they weren’t even joking.
Sean McVay offers an apology to Bill Belichick, Patriots
McVay is a professional and has nothing but respect for the Patriots head coach. Belichick is the best head coach in league history, remember?
“I wish that it wouldn’t have gotten misunderstood,” McVay said via Pro Football Talk. “It was more of a reflection of, I was actually giving Les some, you know, a hard time because when we started watching him, I think we both were in agreement, there’s no way he’d be there because we like the player so much.”
Offering an apology was the next move. McVay really likes Belichick and has nothing but respect for his great work. He also respects Cole.
“If there’s anybody that has more respect for Coach Belichick, what he’s done than I do, I’d like to see him, because I have tremendous respect for this profession, for the players that play at this level, and I would never want it to get misunderstood for Cole Strange or the Patriots organization that anything but respect for the player. That was my reaction and any misunderstanding was my fault for the way that I probably communicated that.”
Let’s see how this ends. Both Belichick and Matt Groh had an explanation for Strange’s selection. They didn’t want to lose him to another team. NFL teams would snatch him right away. Belichick didn’t have much time and didn’t even think twice before getting Strange.
