Update Emerges On Dont’a Hightower’s Free Agency Situation

The New England Patriots were well aware of the fact that they’d lose a few players in free agency. Head coach Bill Belichick entered the offseason knowing that some of his veterans would sign with different teams. Dont’a Hightower may soon be one of these players and he has yet to make a decision on his free agency.

The veteran linebacker is available and NFL teams will snatch him right away. Hightower, 32, has helped the Patriots win a lot of games. He hasn’t even mentioned anything about his retirement and he sure wants to see some action in 2022.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic has an update on Hightower’s situation. Hightower has been part of the Patriots for a decade. We have a few good reasons to believe that he would love to finish his career with the Patriots.

“Hightower is still figuring out what he wants to do,” Howe tweeted. “If he wants to keep playing, he doesn’t need spring ball anyway. Could take a while longer.”

Dont’a Hightower to make a big decision in free agency

Hightower opted out of the 2020 season due to health concerns. The pandemic blocked the entre NFL and a lot of players made similar decisions. Hightower and seven other players sat out the entire season.

The veteran linebacker returned to game action in 15 of 17 games last season. He saw 67% of defensive snaps and this is not the best number in his career. In fact, this is his lowest usage rate since his rookie campaign.

Belichick already has a few big holes on his roster. J.C. Jackson left the team in free agency. Many thought he’d sign with the team and continue his great performance with the team. Jackson had other plans for his career and he took his talents somewhere else.

The Patriots have been linked to several strong prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft. They need a strong cornerback option and yes, Mac Jones needs strong weapons. The Patriots will probably select receivers to add depth to their receiving unit.
