NFL Analyst Thought Patriots Made Most Awkward Pick In 2022 Draft

The New England Patriots made at least one surprising pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Head coach Bill Belichick traded down the draft and traded his No.21 overall to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots had a chance to make their first move with the No.29 overall and Belichick got Cole Strange. Why did the Patriots make this move? They needed wide receivers and cornerbacks. Getting an offensive lineman who was set to be a second-round pick was a really awkward move. Oh wait, there’s an even more awkward pick.

Matt Bowen talked about the strangest picks teams made in the draft. He mentioned the selection of wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. The Patriots used the 50th overall pick to get the wide receiver.

“Thornton has the vertical juice to stretch defenses down the field and the foot quickness to create route separation,” Bowen wrote. “But given the wide receiver talent on the board at No. 50 — including George Pickens, Alec Pierce and Skyy Moore — I felt the Patriots reached a little here to draft Thornton.”

Patriots had to make this pick in the 2022 NFL Draft

Thornton caught the attention of many teams, including the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints. He is a talented player and NFL teams wanted him in their group. Thornton has a lot to offer and his speed makes him a valuable player. Of course, NFL teams considered him a Day 2 prospect and some even said he would be selected later in the round.

The Patriots had a few great reasons to get Thornton. His speed is the No.1 skill that caught Belichick’s attention. The Patriots really need speed and this makes Thornton the right player to join the team. The wide receiver has a chance to show off his real skills. New England gave him a chance and he should get the best of it.

Julian Edelman’s retirement left a big void on the Patriots roster. Belichick is still looking for a No.1 receiver. N’Keal Harry’s future is hanging in the air. The Patriots traded for DeVante Parker and he will probably take the leading position. It’s a long offseason and the Patriots can make a few more moves.
