Patriots Undrafted Free Agent Predicted to Make Final Roster

The New England Patriots may have found a true gem in D’Eriq King. Several NFL analysts believe the Patriots signed the undrafted free agent for a reason, adding that he will probably join the final roster. King is an incredible prospect and he is definitely turning heads.

Brent Sobleski from Bleacher Report was among the first to discuss King’s future with the Patriots.

“The New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick may value versatility more than any other NFL head coach,” Sobleski said. “It came as absolutely no surprise when the organization signed former Miami quarterback D’Eriq King as an undrafted free agent.”

King is incredibly versatile and we all know that head coach Bill Belichick likes versatile players. The talented player didn’t see much action in his final college season, but his final full season was amazing. He was able to throw for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns and five interceptions while running for 538 yards and four touchdowns.

Patriots to get the best of the undrafted free agent, giving him a roster spot

Lance Zierlein praised King’s talent and his comments make perfect sense now. King attracted Belichick’s attention for a few good reasons.

“He hasn’t played receiver since 2017 but appeared to be more than capable at the position when asked to play it,” said Zierlein. “He’s well-built for a role as a slot but needs to train for better short-area quickness and route running. His ability to run RPO and zone-read packages could be enticing for teams looking to create as many options as possible for their offense.”

King can do it all

What makes King so special? He can play both quarterback and wide receiver, just like Julian Edelman. This makes him a good option for the team. King is fine with whatever task he is given. The Patriots have great plans for him and he should really shine in organized team activities and training camp.

“I talked to (Patriots director of player personnel) Matt Groh, and he was excited,” King told NESN’s Zack Cox. “… He told me I’ll do a little bit of everything—receiver, quarterback, running back—whatever I can do to stick.

“…I’m definitely motivated, and you have a chip on your shoulder, whether you get drafted or not. I’ve played quarterback my whole life, but I think I can be a pretty good receiver, as well.”
