Patriots Polarizing Free Agent Signing Named Team’s X-Factor

The New England Patriots made a bunch of free agent signings last offseason. Head coach Bill Belichick had enough cap space to work with. Team owner Robert Kraft was really frustrated at the end of the disappointing season. Kraft wanted Belichick to make all the necessary changes and build a strong team. Belichick signed a few veterans, but some of them didn’t meet expectations. Their poor performance made people talk and fans wanted them out of the team.

Jonnu Smith is definitely one of these players. The veteran tight end was supposed to make a huge impact, but he didn’t. Smith is a brilliant player, but he made zero impact in New England. Belichick offered him a four-year deal worth $50 million in 2021. The Patriots head coach wanted to see a masterpiece. In 2020, Smith delivered 41 receptions and 448 yards and 8 touchdowns with the Tennessee Titans. In his first season with the Patriots, Smith had 28 receptions for 294 yards and one touchdown. Not even close to the numbers he stacked with the Titans. If Smith doesn’t improve his performance, the Patriots will send him away from the team.

Patriots expect more from their free agent

Smith faced several issues last season. He has to do his best this time. According to Ben Linsey from Pro Football Focus, Smith is the team’s biggest X-factor heading into the new season.

Belichick has a backup plan. He always does. Smith’s struggle will be a big blow for the Patriots. However, Belichick has DeVante Parker and a few other reliable options. The Patriots traded for Parker early in the offseason, hoping to get a strong weapon. Mac Jones will be leading the team once again. He had good weapons in 2021 and Belichick will make sure he gets even more this time. Parker and Jones established a really good relationship in the offseason and fans hope to see a strong performance from the powerful duo. If Smith improves his performance and builds great connection with Jones, the Patriots will have enough power to beat the Buffalo Bills and other rivals.
