Patriots Trade Former Starter To McDaniels’ Raiders

The New England Patriots made a lot of changes this offseason and head coach Bill Belichick will make even more. The Patriots brought in new players and traded for a bunch of talented names. According to recent reports, the Patriots decided to trade one particular starter. Ian Rapoport from NFL.com reported that the Patriots have traded Justin Herron to the Las Vegas Raiders. Former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will get to work with a familiar name.

Why did the Raiders agree to this trade? They need depth at offensive tackle which means he is a good option for McDaniels’ new team.

Herron was brilliant with the Patriots. Belichick got him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In his rookie campaign, Herron saw action in 12 games and had 6 starts. In 2021, he played in 16 games and had four starts. McDaniels won’t give him a starting job right away, but he will sure find a fitting role for the newly-added player. NFL players sustain serious injuries and McDaniels could use an extra pair of hands later in the regular season.

McDaniels got rid of former first-rounder, Alex Leatherwood, and had to find a replacement for him. The Chicago Bears snatched Leatherwood and the Raiders could use Herron to fill this position.

Patriots trade starter, work on a backup plan

The Patriots lost Herron and they have a backup plan. Head coach Belichick didn’t provide any info on his plans. What about Marcus Cannon? The Patriots signed him to the practice unit last week. He won three rings with the team, but Belichick sent him to the Houston Texans in 2021. Cannon opted out of the 2020 season due to health concerns. He is back and Belichick has to find the best the best way to use him.

Belichick doesn’t mind making changes. Terrance Mitchell joined the Tennessee Titans. The Patriots got Tristan Vizcaino and he will replace Mitchell on the practice unit. Vizcaino was part of the Patriots team in training camp and the preseason. There was no room for him on the active man roster. Let’s see what happens next in New England.
