Patriots Sign Emergency Backup Quarterback

Second-year quarterback Mac Jones will miss another game and head coach Bill Belichick won’t let things slip down his hands. The New England Patriots have Brian Hoyer and Bailey Zappe on the roster and Belichick has signed another backup quarterback. According to several sources, the Patriots are getting Garrett Gilbert.

Hoyer suffered a concussion in the loss to the Green Bay Packers. It was a big blow for the Patriots because both Jones and Hoyer are out now. Zappe took the starting position last week and he did a really good job. Belichick’s rookie gave the Packers a big headache and he was a pleasant surprise on the football field. The Patriots took the game in overtime and almost beat Aaron Rodgers and his teammates. Peter King praised the Patriots for the great game and Bailey sure got his attention.

Patriots got a familiar backup quarterback

Gilbert is joining the Patriots for a third stint. The team needs depth at quarterback and getting Gilbert makes perfect sense for everyone. Of course, Gilbert won’t get a key role with the team. He will step in as an emergency quarterback for the team. Zappe will have the main word on the field.

The St. Louis Rams selected Gilbert in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He didn’t have much luck and ended up on the Rams’ practice unit. The veteran quarterback made a few stops in the NFL, including two stints with the Patriots.  Gilbert played with the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Commanders. He was a Patriot in Super Bowl XLIX and watched his team beat the Seattle Seahawks. The veteran may not be the best quarterback in the NFL, but he can be of great help for the team in the next period. Hoyer has to clear concussion protocols and Jones needs more time to recover.

It’s a challenging period for the Patriots, but Gilbert is expected to fill the void on Belichick’s current roster. Let’s see how far he can get. Belichick had a reason to bring him back. He wouldn’t sign someone who can’t contribute to the game.
