New England Patriots Coach ‘Completely Reworking The Playbook’

The New England Patriots are done playing around and their coaching staff embraced a different approach. Head coach Bill Belichick made some changes and he’ll be working with new assistants in 2023. Bill O’Brien is one of them. The Patriots coach accepted the challenge he was given and does his best to adjust the playbook.

Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated reported that the legendary coach will make a lot of changes during his time as the Patriots offensive coordinator.

“My understanding is Bill O’Brien is completely reworking the playbook with the new coaches,” Breer said on NBC Sports Boston. “I think it’s going to be a hybrid of a lot of different things. I think it’s going to have some stuff that they did at Alabama that Mac is going to be comfortable with, because Mac was at Alabama. … (O’Brien) coached Deshaun Watson in Houston, he coached Bryce Young the last couple years at Alabama, so he’s got a lot of different ideas.

“I think he’s got really great perspective because he does have the bones of the Patriots offense, but he’s gonna be able to do some things that I think are on the cutting edge of where the sport is going.”

The Patriots coach will help Mac Jones fit in the new playbook

Hiring O’Brien is a game-changer for everyone, including quarterback Mac Jones. The third-year quarterback struggled last season and even got into an awkward situation with Belichick. Numerous reports confirmed the tension between him and Belichick, suggesting that Bailey Zappe will probably replace Jones as a starting quarterback.

Jones had better success with Josh McDaniels and didn’t really like the offensive staff in 2022. Things changed a bit and Jones is super excited about the upcoming season. Working with O’Brien brings him joy for several reasons.

Mike Reiss from ESPN reported that O’Brien is equally excited about working with Jones. Moreover, he came to New England for Jones.

Belichick will throw another quarterback competition in training camp. He hasn’t made a decision on his next starting quarterback which puts Jones in a rather difficult situation. However, O’Brien could make things easier for him.
