Top Rookie Quarterback Seeks Patriots’ Mac Jones For Advice

Mac Jones is in a really awkward position in New England. The New England Patriots will throw another quarterback competition in training camp and yes, Jones can still lose his starting job. Bailey Zappe replaced him last season and did a decent job on the field. Head coach Bill Belichick can add another option to his quarterback unit. Jones may be in a bad position at the moment, but a rookie quarterback has high opinion for him.

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young played with Jones in 2020. The Patriots quarterback led the Crimson Tide to a title and Young was really impressed by his skills.

“Mac was someone I was really close with. I played under him while I was a freshman at Alabama,” Young said in a May 12 press conference. “I’ve definitely reached out to him about the transition and things that he took away in just trying to get prepared for this next level, this next step. So that’s one of many guys who have been super gracious in helping me.”

Jones was brilliant in his rookie campaign. He threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns and the Patriots made the playoffs. His spectacular rookie campaign was followed by a frustrating season. Jones had 2,997 yards passing for 14 touchdowns.

The rookie quarterback trusted Jones for a reason

The Alabama quarterback will try his best to keep his starting job. According to Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux Jones will have a really good season.

“He’s hungry,” the Patriots veteran told reporters on May 11. “He’s ready. I’m going to let Mac speak for himself, but I’m pretty sure he’s ready to go out there and ball out this season.”

Tom Brady’s return to Foxboro will motivate Jones to give his best. Let’s not forget that Jones almost beat Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

“He handled it well that game,” Godchaux said. “The hype was about Tom — which, respectfully so for all he’s done in the league, all he’s done for this program — but I think Mac handled it well that game. He had a great game — actually, we had a chance to win it at the end. He handled it well, and I’m sure he’s going to handle it well this season, too.”
