Familiar Name Emerges As Frontrunner For Lakers Head Coach Gig

The Los Angeles Lakers are actively looking for a head coach and it looks like they have a frontrunner for the position. NBA analysts expected to see Dan Hurley on this position, but he turned down their $70 million offer. Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN reported that Redick took a step back in the race and gave Hurley a chance to make a decision. According to latest reports, JJ Redick is now the top candidate for the coaching vacancy.

Bleacher Report’s Timothy Rapp reported that the Lakers are definitely hiring Redick. He cited Marc Stein’s report to make a statement.

“It would appear that JJ Redick is firmly in the driver’s seat for the Los Angeles Lakers’ head-coaching position,” Rapp wrote. “A ‘source close to the process’ told NBA insider Marc Stein, ‘You know who is getting the job,’ seemingly referencing JJ Redick.”

Lakers may have found their next head coach

Redick has already had an interview with the Lakers and he is having another one. He will meet Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and team owner Jeanie Buss.

“Redick, an ESPN NBA analyst who played 15 years in the league, had a 90-plus-minute visit with Lakers vice president and general manager Rob Pelinka last month at the Chicago draft combine,” Wojnarowski wrote. “Now, a trip to Los Angeles will go far deeper into detail on the job and the meetings will include Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss, sources said.”

James Borrego was another candidate for the Lakers, but he will probably go to Cleveland. In other words, Redick may be the only strong option for the Lakers.

“Borrego’s apparent lead in the Cleveland search could end up leaving Redick as the only top-tier candidate left on the Lakers’ list that they have a clear shot at,” per Stein.

Analysts first mentioned Redick as a coaching option for the Lakers after Darvin Ham’s firing. He has a podcast with LeBron James many interpreted this connection as a one-way ticket to LA. Redick’s friendship with LeBron may have played a role in this one, but LeBron is not really involved in the search.
