Patriots Quarterback Labeled A ‘Top Trade’ Possibility

The New England Patriots selected Drake Maye with the 3^rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Maye’s selection put Jacoby Brissett in a rather uncomfortable position and at least one NFL analysts believes that the Patriots quarterback will end up on the trade block.

Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report discussed Brissett’s position with the team. According to him, Brissett is a viable trade candidate who may start the new season somewhere else. The Patriots added Brissett to their roster this offseason to mentor young quarterbacks, so this trade scenario makes perfect sense.

“The Patriots would love to have Brissett around for all of the 2024 campaign to help Maye learn about how to approach the quarterback position in the NFL,” Knox wrote on July 3. “But there is usually a quarterback need across the NFL and that could lead to interest on the trade market. The Patriots do not have to trade Brissett, but he will at least be mentioned in trade conversations when Maye takes over the starting job.”

Maye has the right skills to start a game, but he doesn’t have any NFL experience. Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo will do some calculations after training camp and pick the best QB for the first portion of the season.

“The Patriots would love to have Maye start a majority of their games in 2024,” Knox added. “That leaves Brissett in an awkward spot. He is not guaranteed to have a full season’s worth of playing time. He may not even play one quarter of the regular-season games.”

Brissett has started 48 games in his career. He made a few stops in the NFL, spending time with the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Commanders. He had a few stints with the Patriots and may be on his way out again.

Former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer told Mike Reiss from ESPN that the Patriots probably plan to use Brissett as a starter early in the season. He added that Brissett is the ideal mentor for Maye and Patriots players like him.
