Report: Cam Newton Sets Impressive Practice Record

Cam Newton, the Patriots favorite to win the starting quarterback job, is setting a practice record. The New England Patriots have been doing everything they can to get back on track. After the 2019 season, some people were looking for a complete re-haul of the organization.

Hopefully, new pick up Cam Newton can pick up some slack in 2020. He is a new signee and a big pick up for the team. Most people believe that he will eventually be the starter for the Patriots.

Apparently, he is having quite the showing during training camp. This is great to see. A lot of people thought he would not make it past the training camp.

Cam Newton's 39 throws in team drills were the most I've ever recorded in a single practice (going back to 2016).

Previous high was 36 from Jimmy Garoppolo (8/4/17) and Brian Hoyer (8/3/18 when Tom Brady got his birthday off).

After Thursday's practice, most experts consider him the leader in the QB race. The Athletic's Jeff Howe wrote: "Cam Newton was decisively the Patriots’ best quarterback of the day. He was 10 of 17 in team drills and completed passes to James White (three), Devin Ross (two), Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, Mohamed Sanu, J.J. Head coach Bill Belichick talked about Cam Newton previously.

“Right now, we want to try to give everybody an opportunity to get the basics. We’re really doing that at all positions. Everyone is rotating through; we’re trying to give everyone an opportunity to run the basic plays, get the basic fundamentals now,” he said.

“Brian Hoyer’s got the most experience of any of our quarterbacks in our system. Jarrett Stidham is really coming on here in Year 2. He got a great year last year, in terms of learning and personal and technique development at the position. And Cam has been a late addition, but he’s brought a lot of energy and obviously playing experience to our room. For him, it’s catching up on the specifics of the Patriots’ system, terminology and so forth, which he’s worked extremely hard at. …

“I just haven’t had experience working with Cam, but he works extremely hard. He puts a lot into it, as do Jarrett and Brian.”

The Patriots have a long way to go before they are ready for the big time. But given the moves they are making, it definitely seems like they know what they are looking for.
