NESN Broadcaster Diagnosed With Cancer

Cancer kills more people than any other disease, and it’s sad how the number of cancer patients grows with every day that goes by.

Sports fans were shocked to learn that NESN broadcaster Jerry Remy is diagnosed with cancer. Again.

“Jerry Remy has been diagnosed once again with cancer. At this time, Jerry’s focus is on his medical treatment. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at NESN and the Red Sox are with Jerry and his family during this difficult time,” the network’s statement read.

Remy deals with a cancer diagnosis for the sixth time in his life. He had his last treatment in January, and underwent five weeks of radiation treatment. The broadcaster also did chemo in August, and had surgery for lung cancer on June 26 last year.

“It started in June with surgery chemo and 5 weeks of radiation. It ended today. Finished. Thanks to the team at MGH and the support I got from many people. To my co-patients stay strong. Now a little time to gain strength and down to the Fort. Go Pats !” Remy wrote after the last day of his treatment, adding that he’s ready for the spring training in Fort Myers, Florida.

The 65-year-old broadcaster was first diagnosed with lung cancer ten years ago.

Remy was born in Fall River, and grew up in Somerset. He lives in Weston, and Sports Illustrated voted him Massachusetts’ Favorite TV announcer in 2004. That’s the same year when the National Sportcasters and Sportswriters Association decided to name him the Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year.

Before becoming a broadcaster, Remy was the Red Sox second baseman in the period between 1978 and 1985. He made the American League All-Star team with his first season with the Red Sox.
