Just In: Patriots Decide Fate Of Danny Etling

Danny Etling has been filling headlines these days, and this time the Patriots have a great news for him.

A bad one. The team has released Danny Etling, as confirmed by Mark Daniesl of The Providence Journal. This doesn’t come as a surprise after all. Etling was a seventh-round pick in the NFL Draft out of LSU. Yes, quarterbacks do struggle to make rosters when being accepted with low picks. Head coach Bill Belichick was probably trying to see the potential in Etling.

The whole team viewed Etling in this way. He won’t play with the team, but the Patriots will like to keep him around. If other teams don’t sign him, the Patriots will sure have him join the practice squad.

According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots already told Etling of their plans to release him. Or keep him with the training squad.

Etling didn’t have an inspiring preseason, and this is good news for all the teams trying to get leftovers. Many NFL teams are stalking the New England Patriots in an effort to get every player that doesn’t make the 53-man roster. That’s what happened to Austin Carr last season.

Etling may still be claimed by the team, but Brian Hoyer stirred the pots in the team. Hoyer is the backup quarterback for Tom Brady. Etling could’ve reached the roster spot by beating him out for the No.2 spot this season. That was an unrealistic scenario, and Etling is now out. The team has decided to enter the new season with Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer.

New England needed three quarterbacks in 2016 because Brady was out of the field for the first two games. That’s how Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett made the team.

What will happen now that Etling is out of the team? Let’s wait and find out.
