Watch: Sony Michel Scores First Touchdown Of Super Bowl LIII

Sony Michel saved the game.

The New England Patriots are the first team to reach for the end zone in Super Bowl LIII, and they did that with just seven minutes left of the fourth quarter. Tight end Rob Gronkowski hauled in a 29-yard pass from quarterback Tom Brady and brought the Patriots to the end zone. Sony Michel took it the extra two yards and scored the first touchdown for his team while giving them a 10-3 lead.

Michel is the second rookie in the last 30 season to score a rushing touchdown in the Super Bowl. His scoring was not really high, but the Patriots used his skills well. He rushed for 53 yards on 4.8 yards per carry.

“It’s been amazing knowing that I can come here and be able to learn a lot,” Michel said of his game with the Patriots. “I just think I’ve been able to come in and be another guy that’s willing to do their job.”

Head coach Bill Belichick is more than happy with his talent.

“Yeah, well, I mean, he’s a good back,” Belichick said. “He’s a good player, runs well, takes care of the ball, he’s tough, he’s got good playing strength, runs through some arm tackles. He’s still got a lot to learn, still a lot of things that he can work on, but he’s a tough kid, he’s smart, he works hard, he’s out there every day, so he keeps getting better. That’s a good thing.”

“I think each player’s different, each situation’s different. I don’t know if there’s one set standard. We have guys on our team at that position that didn’t play at all as rookies that have been very productive and good players for us. Other guys played as rookies and played less as it went along. So, I don’t know. Just keep grinding it out day by day, week by week and see where it goes. Just take it one day at a time.”
