LeBron James Releases Statement Following Death of Congressman, Civil Rights Icon John Lewis

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is one of the many NBA players to mourn the loss of Congressman John Lewis. The three-time NBA champion took to his social media to share a statement following the death of Lewis. The Civil Rights icon died at 80.

Lewis had been part of the United States Congress since 1986. People remember him as one of the organizers of the march that resulted in “Bloody Sunday” on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, on March 7, 1965. Local and state police in Alabama attacked protesters on the bridge, beating them brutally.

Lewis was a United States Representative of the fifth congressional district of Georgia. He has played a big role in the American civil rights movements for the past decades. In December 2019, Lewis announced that he had been battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

King James took to his Twitter account to honor Lewis. He also reposted tributes of other people for Lewis on his Instagram stories.

LeBron has shown great interest in history. His SpringHill Company has signed several projects about the Civil Rights movement. These projects also cover the impact Muhammad Ali, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had back in the days. They used their increased stature to make a change and contribute to the movement.

Other players join LeBron James in the praise of John Lewis

LeBron isn’t the only NBA player to praise Lewis. Thunder point guard and NBPA president Chris Paul delivered a message, and showed his respect for Lewis.

Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes couldn’t hide his sadness after losing one of the biggest figures in the nation. He shared a photo of Lewis accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. If by any chance you don’t know, it’s the highest civilian honor in the country. Former President Barack Obama gave him the medal for his accomplishments.

Newly-signed Brooklyn Nets veteran Jamal Crawford shared a simple message. According to him, Lewis was a hero.

Lewis was really a hero. He was a modern-day hero, and he was helping the nation in the most difficult times. Lewis has always supported non-violence, and some people should really learn from him.
