Bill Belichick Reveals Main Focus For New England Patriots’ Training Camp

The upcoming 2020 season will definitely be a challenging one for the New England Patriots. With the departure of long-time quarterback Tom Brady, there’s been an ongoing debate on who’s going to replace him. Moreover, several of their starting players also opted out of training camp, leaving a depleted roster.

Despite the situation, multi-titled head coach Bill Belichick reminded what his players’ focus should be in the upcoming training camp:

“Everybody needs to learn certain fundamentals, certain basics and every player, no matter how long he’s played, whether it’s two years or 20 years, there’s still a basic progression to training camp at that player’s position,” said Belichick about his team’s approach to the 2020 training camp structure. “That’s really what we’re going to do, that’s where we’re going to start. That’s what needs to be done, regardless of who the player is, what position he plays, whether he’s been here for 10 years or this is his first year.”

The team was deprived of preseason games to prepare for the regular season. So, they will now focus on the fundamentals. Patriot’s irregular roster come Week 1 will rely solely based on practice performance and development.

Virtual Meetings Before Training Camp

They had some virtual meetings over this period and discussed the strategy.

“We had a lot of individual meetings,” Belichick explained. “Our team meetings were more limited because just the quality of having a meeting with 60 or 90 people as opposed to four or five. The engagement’s a lot higher (in smaller meetings). The engagement’s a lot better. The mute button doesn’t have to be off like it does when you have 100 people on the meeting and so forth. We learned a lot about those virtual meetings, and we definitely did a lot of things to try to heighten the engagement.”

Bill Belichick and the whole of New England will look to overcome the odds and challenges in 2020. Despite being undermanned, the club is still aiming to defend its AFC East title for the 12th-straight year. And, of course, to ultimately snag a spot in the playoff picture.
