Report: Patriots Plan To Work Out Super Athletic Tight End With No Healthy Options

The New England Patriots don’t have a healthy tight end right now, so the team may be interested in trying out some other options. New England is going after talented tight ends and they may work with free agents Dylan Cantrell, Charles Jones, and David Wells.

Ryan Izzo deals with a hamstring issue and Dalton Keene’s knee looks bad. They are the only tight ends New England has at the moment but they were limited participants this week. The Patriots placed Devin Asiasi on injured reserve this week. Practice squad tight end Jake Burt has his spot on injured reserve, too.

The Patriots pay work with fullback Jakob Johnson on the roster, but he hasn’t seen much action at tight end this season. Rookie outside linebacker Rashod Berry is on the Patriots practice unit. He played tight end at Ohio State.

Patriots have several tight end options

Cantrell is a former Texas Tech wide receiver. He is definitely an intriguing option for the team. Cantrell spent training camp with the Arizona Cardinals and they pushed him to tight end. The Los Angeles Chargers selected Cantrell as a wide receiver in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Cantrell was on the practice unit in his rookie campaign and spent 2019 on IR.

The talented player measured at 6 feet 3, 226 pounds at his pro day two years ago. He ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash with a 1.55-second 10-yard split, 6.56-second 3-cone drill, 4.03-second short shuttle, 41-inch vertical leap and 11-feet, 3-inch broad jump. Should we add that he bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times?

In his career at Texas Tech, Cantrell caught 158 passes for 1,873 yards and 18 touchdowns in four years. He was able to catch 71 passes for 816 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior.

Jones was part of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills in the past year. The undrafted free agent has one career reception for 5 yards. The 254-pounder ran a 4.9-second 40-yard dash at his pro day last year.

Wells was part of the Kansas City Chiefs. He ran a 4.75-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2018.
