Former No. 2 Pick Emerges as ‘Realistic’ Quarterback Option for Patriots

The New England Patriots will be looking for a quarterback in the offseason. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton didn’t help the team make the playoffs in 2020. Head coach Bill Belichick likes everything Newton brings to the field, but his signal-caller lacks weapons. His passing game was horrible, and New England needs more than a running quarterback. It looks like there’s one great quarterback option for the Patriots.

Chicago Bears Mitchell Trubisky may be making his way to the Patriots.

Lou Merloni from WEEI discussed the realistic quarterback options for the Patriots. He put Trubisky on the top of his list.

Some say Trubisky would go with the Bears in the offseason. However, both parties have yet to reach an agreement. Trubisky may be playing for his job on Sunday. The same applies to head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace’s job. But, even a great performance can’t guarantee his return to the team.

If the Bears don’t bring Trubisky back or if he decides to become a free agent, New England has a realistic chance to get him.

A fitting quarterback option for the Patriots

Trubisky has made a name for himself. He led the Bears to the playoffs. Of course, the team lost the Week 17 game to the Green Bay Packers. At one point of the 2020 NFL season, Trubisky played like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. However, he struggled with inconsistency in Chicago and lost his job to Nick Foles in the season. The player regained it for the team’s stretch run.

Did Trubisky try his best to raise his stock on the market? Is this enough to attract Bill Belichick’s attention?

The Bears used rolling pockets, misdirection, and motion at the line of scrimmage to ease Trubisky’s pathway. Belichick does things differently. The team was reluctant to show this flexibility with their starting signal-caller. Aside from some minor differences, the team’s offense was pretty similar to the offense offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels created for veteran quarterback Tom Brady.

Trubisky won’t fit in the same system. The former No.2 pick can be solid, but he is not the best quarterback in the league.
