Latest Look At New England Patriots Salary Cap Situation Amid Flurry Of Moves

The New England Patriots entered the offseason with a thick salary cap. The team had a lot of money to get the assets they needed to fill up the bigest roster holes. Head coach Bill Belichick played wisely with his money and it looks like he has enough millions to get even more players and save some.

The Patriots head coach was really active this week and fans loved his shopping spree. Belichick has great success in the negotiations with Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Matthew Judon, David Andrews, and Kyle Van Noy. Andrews and Van Noy are familiar with the system as they have spent many seasons on Belichick’s roster. So, how much money is left? A lot.

Miguel Benzan from Boston Sports Journal has more details.

Some of the deals are pretty cheap. This doesn’t apply to the deal Brown got.

Patriots have enough salary cap space to get more big names

One thing stands for sure. The Patriots salary cap looks pretty great at the moment, and the roster looks even better. The cap is tight this season and many teams couldn’t afford a big splash in the offseason. Belichick played things diferently. His team was able to get elite players and a few other weapons to build the roster. Most of the contracts for the Patriots have been backloaded. This gives the team enough flexibility at the moment and in the future when the cap goes up.

When it comes to the quarterback situation, we can’t really say much. The Patriots may try to get Marcus Mariota if he is available. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is a solid option, too. Trading for Garoppolo would tighten the cap situation in New England. Belichick may draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft and make him compete with Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham for the No.1 quarterback spot.

If this works, the Patriots would have a reliable cheap option in the next few years before the player gets big money. Belichick has created the perfect formula and he sure has a few ideas on the table.
