Dante Scarnecchia Says Patriots Gave up on Wide Receiver ‘Just Like’ Julian Edelman

Former offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia believes that the New England Patriots made one mistake by releasing a wide receiver who was just like Julian Edelman.

Scarnecchia is no longer part of the Patriots, but he follows every move his team makes. He watched Mac Jones adjust his skills to Bill Belichick’s system. Guess what… Legendary Scarnecchia really liked Jones’ performance in the rookie campaign. If you ask him, he will say that the team needs a wide receiver who provides the same impact as Edelman.

“We’ve always had that guy, a guy who moved the chains,” Scarnecchia told Guregian. “Whether it was Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, when all else failed, he was that guy. But they don’t have that guy right now.”

These wide receivers had huge success during their time with the Patriots. Edelman won three rings as Patriot. If you ask Scarnecchia, he will say that the Patriots already had the “potential heir to Edelman.” Braxton Berrios.

Dante Scarnecchia gave the Patriots an idea

Berrios was a sixth-round pick for the Patriots in 2018. He spent his rookie campaign on injured reserve and the team released him after a year. Berrios is part of the New York Jets and yes, he is really great. Did the Patriots make a mistake? Why did they let him go?

In 2021, Berrios averaged a league-high 30.4 yards per kick return. He recorded 46 receptions for 431 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

“He’s just like those guys,” Scarnecchia told Guregian of Berrios. “He gets open. He can run the reverses. People in New York think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.”

Maybe the Patriots should make a move to get someone with similar skills as Berrios.

The Patriots have a chance to get Berrios in free agency, but Belichick may not be willing to spend a lot of money this time. He spent millions of dollars last offseason to get the best free agents on the market. The Patriots lost the wild-card game. Maybe Belichick will be more careful with his spending this time.
