Patriots Criticized For $20.8 Million Extension to DT: ‘That’s a Lot’

The New England Patriots made some moves to secure some of their players for the next few seasons. Davon Godchaux is one of these players and he has just signed a $20.8 million contract extension. Head coach Bill Belichick even said that Godchaux is “one of the best defensive tackles” in the NFL. The Patriots head coach may believe that this extension is a good reward for the DT, but an NFL executive has something else to say.

The executive talked to Mike Giardi and discussed Godchaux’s new deal with the team. According to him, it’s just too much.

“That’s a lot,” the executive told Giardi. “Weren’t they bad against the run last year?”

Mike Reiss discussed the details of this extension. Godchaux has a signing bonus of $10.5 million. He will earn $1.5 million in 2022 and another $8.75 million in 2022.

Belichick lowered the cap number by $1.5 million and now has $3 million in cap space.

Patriots offered an extension to the DT for a reason

The exec mentioned the Patriots’ performance in 2021, saying they were bad against the run. The team ranked 22nd overall and players allowed 2,103 yards in total and 4.5 per carry.

Belichick made all the necessary changes and his team has to do better against the run. Godchaux is not responsible for the damage in 2021 and he will definitely improve in 2022.

Pro Football Focus says Godchaux is the highest-ranked Patriots interior defender for the 2021 NFL season. The player ranked 42nd overall when compared to players at his position and scored 63.7. We have a few good reasons to believe that Godchaux will use this as a good base for his next season. He will improve his performance and offer a great impact on the football field.

New England is entering a challenging season and players have to overcome a few major obstacles. Let’s see what happens in the new season. Belichick and his new assistants noticed great improvement in players with big roles on the roster.
