Patriots Reportedly Concerned QB Mac Jones Is Dealing With The Yips

The New England Patriots don’t look good at all right now. The team has lost too many games so far in the 2023 NFL season and the organization will have to make some changes. Some players will have to go to make room for more efficient options. Quarterback Mac Jones is having the worst season in his career and we have analysts saying that he may be dealing with the Yips.

Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated covered this topic. According to him, the Patriots are worried that the situation of their signal-caller may be worse than it appears. Is it the Yips? For those who do not know what this is, it is an unexplained loss of cognition and motor function that affects athletes. This is a serious concern for the struggling organization, but it makes sense.

“They were sold a smart, efficient game managing quarterback and they’re getting a guy that makes a lot mistakes out there that doesn’t do the smart thing that often,” Breer said in an appearance on FS1’s The Herd. “There’s not a lot of confidence in Mac Jones right now inside that building.”

Patriots’ Jones may face a big challenge if it is the Yips

Jones looked like an excellent prospect for the team. He wasn’t a top pick in his class, but did better job than guys who were selected before him. Jones had a successful rookie campaign as a Patriots quarterback. He looked like someone who can be the next Patriots franchise quarterback. Well, something changed in his second year with the Patriots and many linked his struggles to changes in the offense. This may make sense, but Jones struggles again this season and he works with Bill O’Brien now.

Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski advised Jones to request a trade from the team before they get rid of him. If you ask Julian Edelman, he will say that Jones actually lost confidence. Both theories make sense and the only thing we can do right now is wait for an update on his future with the team. Will jones stay around in 2024?
