Mic’d Up Clip Commemorates Jason McCourty’s Touchdown Breakup

One of the key highlights from Super Bowl LIII was Jason McCourty’s pass breakup on Brandin Cooks. Without the Patriots corner racing to the back of the end zone, the Rams would have earned a touchdown, as the Rams receiver was wide open in the back of the end zone. However, Jared Goff saw him late, which gave McCourty enough time to react.

The New England Patriots saw that same play by Los Angeles earlier in the game and were waiting to be repeated, as highlighted by NFL Turning Point.

“It was a play we saw earlier in the game,” Former Patriots defensive play caller and newest Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said on Tuesday. “We talked about the play. We actually had it covered a little bit better earlier in the game.”

“They went back to it,” Flores continued. “We knew that they were going to go back to it. We had a miscommunication. Jason, he made the play of the game. It was an incredible effort play is really what it was. And that’s something we talk about on a day-to-day basis. We had a guy make a mistake. We had a guy cover for him. And then it ended up being the play of the game. I was so happy for Jason because you know he’s had, you know, he was 0-16 a year ago [with the Browns]. He came in here and he worked and this was an up-and-down season, I’m so happy for him to go out and win it.”

McCourty also gave his insight and said that, once he realized the play, he simply got on his high-horse to get to the spot.

“Just running,” he said after the Patriots’ 13-3 victory over Los Angeles. “That was a play we came to earlier in the game. After a few plays I said to Stephen (Anderson), “Man, I have to get that for you.” They came back to that play and I just took off. I saw Brandin (Cooks) wide open, and really wasn’t sure if I was going to get there in time, but I was able to get the ball out of there and live to see another play. That was huge for us.”

That touchdown breakup saved seven points from going on the board, which made the already tight game even tighter.
